ETL Certification

ETL is the most dynamic safety certification mark in North America, with a history dating back to the electrical testing laboratory founded by Thomas Edison in 1896, and is widely known and recognized in North America. The ETL Mark is the exclusive mark of Intertek Group, the world's leading quality and safety organization.

Introduction

ETL SEMKO is part of Intertek Testing Services, the world's largest inspection organization for products and consumer goods, with 240 laboratories and 469 offices in 93 countries in North America, Europe and Asia. testing, as well as providing registration of quality management systems for a variety of industries such as pharmaceuticals, HVAC, appliances, telecommunications, aerospace, automation, semiconductors, building materials, energy generation systems, and more.

Any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product that bears the ETL inspection mark indicates that it has been tested to meet the relevant industry standards. Each industry has different testing standards, so be sure to consult with a professional about the requirements for a particular product. the ETL inspection mark is widely used in cable products to indicate that the relevant tests have been passed.

In most areas of the United States, approval of electrical products is mandatory. Jurisdiction) and is considered "approved".

Factory Inspection

ETL requires a factory inspection before issuance of the certificate, followed by quarterly follow-up factory inspections, which require quarterly payment of the certificate license fee in addition to the factory inspection fee. If necessary, the inspector can visually re-test the product or take a sample and test it in the laboratory. The licensee must sign a statutory contract (service agreement) with ETL, which clearly sets out the responsibilities of the manufacturer and the conditions for continuous ETL listing and use of the ETL logo.

Application documents

Until 2013 there are two ways to obtain an ETL certificate, one is to transfer through the CB test report, or you can apply directly, the documents required to be submitted are as follows.

1. application form

2. A copy of the CB test certificate (direct application is not required)

3. Copy of the CB test report (direct application is not required)

4. Sample

5. Other relevant test results and product data, such as: product manuals, photos, component lists, etc.

(Such as through the CB report to turn, the difference test is required)

U.S. Certification

Certification Mark

ETL is the abbreviation of the U.S. Electronic Testing Laboratories (ETL), which was founded by American inventor Thomas Edison in 1896 and enjoys a high reputation in the United States and around the world. As with UL and CSA, ETL can issue the ETL certification mark according to UL standards or U.S. national standards testing, but also according to UL standards or U.S. national standards and CSA standards or Canadian standards testing and issuance of composite certification mark. The "us" at the bottom right indicates that it is applicable to the United States, and the "c" at the bottom left indicates that it is applicable to Canada, while the "us" and "c" are applicable in both countries.

Application criteria

Any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product that bears the ETL mark indicates that the product has met the minimum requirements of generally accepted U.S. and Canadian product safety standards, and that it has been tested for compliance with the relevant product safety standards.

The ETL also requires that the manufacturing site has been inspected and that the applicant agrees to conduct regular follow-up inspections of its plant thereafter to ensure that the product always meets this requirement.

ETL basic test methods

1) Leakage current test: The sample board used for the leakage current test has not been tested before the test is conducted

2), normal temperature rise: test test method: thermocouple: the standard requires the use of 24-30AWG thermocouple, (currently 30AWG used in the laboratory)

3) Leakage current test: General test conditions: T= 32+/-2°C, RH= 88 ±2%. Duration: 48 hours after completion to do leakage current test test conditions T=20~30 °C, RH=93+/-3%

4) Withstand voltage test: General products without double insulation and grounding requirements: 1000 V / 1 minute (equipment target voltage creep time set to 5 seconds, set the cut-off current to 8.3 mA, then hold at the target voltage for 1 minute)

Scope of application

Company

Those that have been tested to meet the relevant product safety standards, representing a manufacturing plant that has agreed to receive strict periodic inspections to ensure consistent product quality, can be sold to both the US and Canadian markets.

Marking

(1) ETL inspection mark any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical products with the ETL inspection mark to show that it is tested to meet the relevant industry standards.

(2) ETL listing mark any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical products with the ETL mark as long as it is tested to meet the relevant product safety standards.

The ETL mark indicates that the product has passed the NRTL and or Canadian SCC approval test. The fact that a product has an ETL listing means that it has met the minimum requirements for product safety standards. In addition, the ETL mark indicates that the manufacturer's production site meets a certain range of standard requirements and is followed up by regular factory audits to ensure continued consistency. ETL has been around for over 100 years, and the three letters ETL are short for Electrical Testing Labs, founded by inventor Thomas Edison in 1896, which stands for innovation, influence, independent and open product testing, and extensive experience.

ETLus mark (only us, no c): safety mark for products entering the U.S. market cETL mark (only c, no us): safety mark for products entering the Canadian market cETLus mark: safety mark for products entering the U.S. market and the Canadian market Factory inspection The U.S. ETL certification requires inspection four times, Canada is two times a year; to have both is four times a year.

The difference between UL and ETL UL and ETL both represent products that have passed the National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) test and meet the appropriate safety standards. So the real difference is in the service. As an ETL customer, you can enjoy tailored testing, inspection and certification services, fast operational cycles and flexible working methods. We are creating ways of working more closely with our customers so that your products get to market faster, smoother and more efficiently.

ETL certification and UL certification has the same North American market access, but the cost of ETL certification than UL certification is much lower, generally only half of UL certification, and, ETL certification of product testing can be transferred through the CB test report, you can save a lot of testing costs.

ETL certification time is also much shorter than UL certification, under special circumstances, ETL can be issued first, and then factory review, to save valuable time for the export of your products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about the ETL Listing Mark Why do manufacturers choose the ETL Listing Mark?

Manufacturers want to have multiple options to meet their sourcing needs, and testing and certification service providers are an important part of that choice.

The law requires that products sold in the U.S. be tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) designated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Commission (OSHA). NRTL's function is to provide independent evaluation, testing and certification services for a variety of electric, gas and oil products.

A product bearing the ETL Listing Mark indicates that the product has met the basic requirements of the specified safety standard. In addition, the mark indicates that the manufacturer's facility complies with various compliance measures and is subject to regular follow-up inspections to verify that the product has sustained conformance.

What is NRTL Nationally Recognized NRTL is an independent laboratory accredited by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Commission (OSHA) to test products in accordance with the requirements of applicable product safety standards (such as those established by USW UL and other standard-setting bodies).

What does the ETL Listing Mark mean? Simply put, the ETL Listing Mark means that your product has been tested by an accredited NRTL in the U.S. and or SCC in Canada, meets accepted national standards, and meets the minimum requirements for the sale or distribution of your product. For distributors, retailers and customers, the ETL mark is a guarantee that the product meets safety standards and has been tested and certified by a third party.

Will the retailer accept the ETL listing mark? Because the ETL Listing Mark is widely accepted and recognized as proof of product compliance, there is no reason why a retailer would not accept an ETL Listing Mark on a product. It is likely that individual retailers or distributors do not accept ETL-listed products because of misinformation in the marketplace - misinformation that has misled some manufacturers into believing they cannot choose their own third-party testing partners.

The ETL Listing Mark is unfamiliar, and there is no standard formula to give users a better understanding of the ETL Listing Mark. The correct approach varies depending on the context, environment, and other details of the specific situation. Some users simply need to show them that other products with the ETL listing mark and respected by all can be found in the Listed Products Catalog to eliminate their concerns. Others may insist that the UL Mark is the only acceptable proof of product compliance, which requires a fuller explanation of the real legal requirements implied by third-party product safety testing. Tell them about the NRTL program and explain to them that the product safety certification program includes the same testing, listing, labeling, and follow-up inspection services as UL.

Which countries accept the ETL Mark In the United States and Canada, the ETL Mark is widely accepted as proof of product conformity.

The ETL Listing Mark is accepted throughout North America. Because the ETL Listing Mark is widely recognized and accepted as proof of product compliance with safety standards, retailers, inspectors, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) accept ETL-listed products.

History of the ETL Listing Mark

The "ETL" has been around for over 100 years. When manufacturers apply for the ETL Listing Mark for their products, the letters "ETL" bring with them a history of innovation, influence and independence. In fact, the original Electrical Testing Laboratory (ETL) was founded by Thomas Edison in 1896.

The Electrical Test Laboratory was established to address the safety and performance of lamps. Edison's idea was to provide assurance to consumers through a variety of product performance and safety tests. Edison pioneered the basic principles of third-party lamp testing methods that are still used today, such as expert monitoring of lamps and bulbs to determine their longevity, luminous intensity, and whether they will burn or explode.
